The use of corporal punishment by teachers is common in many schools in the Arab Bedouin community in the Negev, the dry southern region of Israel, despite the absolute prohibition by law. Teachers report that they have no other effective tool to deter students and cope with discipline difficulties. In order to eradicate this phenomenon, the origin of corporal punishment must be understood against the background of the unique characteristics of Bedouin society. The success of intervention to prevent violence depends on understanding the causes of the phenomenon and on changing the behavior patterns of children, teachers and parents. Such understanding may shed light on both the reactions of the children and the difficulty of teachers in adopting effective educational methods that do not involve the use of force.
